I totally agree with both and Queenindisguise, but wanted to add that "depression" is a reasonably generic term woman want xxx dating that encompasses different types of mood disorders. There's a big difference between someone who is, say, dysthymic, and someone who is, say, cyclothymic. Both have depression, but their episodes manifest in very different ways. That's why I completely agree with -'s suggestion that you find a psychologist who can help narrow it down. The one would use for a particular type of depression not work well on someone with another type. And then there's all the attendant differences in body chemistry, bla blah blah, that make a work well for Person A with dysthymia, but not for Person B with dysthymia. Being on meds is not a bad thing, necessarily. If you had diabetes, you'd likely take insulin; if you broke your leg, you'd likely wear a cast. This is really no different. There are a variety of anti-depressants out there, from the SSRI's (selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors) to the MAOI's (monoamine oxidase inhibitors) to tricyclics and aminoketones like Wellbutrin. They all do slightly different things, sometimes drastiy different things, and are very worth the exploration for most people. The hardest part is getting through the depressive episodes and unfortunately, there's no magic cure for the period of dealing with a depressive episode. It's not that people who are in episodes refuse to get out and do stuff to make themselves feel better- they literally can't do it. Telling them to go for a walk is great advice, but a lot of them simply cannot channel the necessary energy to move. It just isn't there. Depression hurts. Literally. My best advice os to do what you can to get through, avoid alcohol, try to talk to as people as you can, about whatever, even if only on the forums, and do go a psychologist.
